Protective Styles and Hair Growth

Are you looking at yourself in the mirror each morning and wondering, “How is my hair the same length after so many months, years even?” I know and understand the frustration because I was doing the same thing last year after doing my big chop in the summer of 2018. The answer to this question though is that hair growth is always taking place. The follicles continue to grow out through our roots normally without assistance, to around a quarter of an inch every month. Say what now? In knowing this, the question then becomes, “How is that I cannot retain my length?”

There are so many factors that can affect and damage our hair, from how we handle it (improper brushing/combing/detangling) to the weather on the outside. Therefore, protective styles are EXTREMELY important, especially for those of us with curly/kinky hair which is naturally dry and prone to breakage. What is protective styling? Protective styling preserves your hair health and protects it from damage that can result from harsh wind, cold, fingers, and more.

The goal is to keep your ends tucked away safely in order to prevent over-manipulation of the hair. Many men and women who do not utilize protective styles in their regular hair regimens normally encounter a lot more breakage than those who do; that is why many people do not get the hair growth and length retention they want. Statistics shares that among the black population, the number one thing that prevents our hair from getting long is breakage and hair loss that is typically due to relaxing or improper manipulation.

I know all about this!

So as a child growing up, I had very long and thick hair. I think to save time, energy and possibly her sanity (lol), my mother deliberately had my hair mostly in protected styles ranging from cornrows to very tiny plaits/braids so she didn’t have to deal with my huge afro so much. I did not notice at the time that when compared to my peers/schoolmates, my hair was always longer. I am literally just putting it all together! My hair then took a turn for the worst and seemed to stop growing as much as it did when my hair was relaxed at the age of 11. It was healthy at first, don’t get me wrong, but after relaxing I wore my hair down/out 80% of the times throughout the years and I encountered a lot of breakage and shedding as a result.

What would then happen is, even though my hair was growing from the roots, the ends were always so broken up, that when I went to the hairdresser to straighten, the ends were trimmed and most times out right CUT (you all with relaxed hair or who have had relaxed hair know exactly what I mean lol). We all like to wear our hair out, I get it! I know I do! But if you want to retain your hair length, do consider adding a few protective styles to your hair routine. You will notice the difference!
